SocialMiami.com Highlights Alonzo & Tracy Mourning, and Overtown Youth Center Graduates

This year Alonzo Mourning Charities (AMC) celebrated the high school graduation of 11 Overtown Youth Center1 (OYC) seniors at Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse in Miami Beach. Surrounded by OYC and AMC staff, family, and supporters, these students are poised to become contributing citizens and follow a constructive life path. They overcame insurmountable obstacles (economics, violence, and low high school graduation rates) and defied the odds by graduating and continuing their educational journeys in college, Job Corps or the U.S. Air Force. Each graduate received a trunk filled with school supplies and necessities, as well as a laptop and a $5000 scholarship from Alonzo and Tracy Mourning (pictured with the new graduates).

Alonzo Mourning Brings Sponsor-A-Student to Miami

For the past 11 years, NBA superstar Alonzo Mourning has provided many exciting activities for the shining youth of South Florida. Along with being one of the most well known basketball players for the Miami HEAT, Mourning has also made quite a substantial name for himself as a philanthropist not only in Miami, but all over the nation. On March 21, he expanded this beneficial name by launching AMC’s 2011 signature campaign, Sponsor A-Student.”

To promote the wellness and education of children all across America, guest joined Mourning at Wayne Boich’s private home at the ICON South Beach. It was the first time that the anxious press had the opportunity to truly sit down with Mourning and retrieve the information about the new advantageous campaign and how it will ultimately benefit the Overtown Youth Center in its educational pursuits. It was also the first time to hear Mourning’s process for sending this campaign to Miami and national public schools alike.
