Zo's Annual Holiday Party Brings Cheer to 400 South Florida Kids

Alonzo Mourning Charities’ Helps Make the Holidays Special for Youth in our Communities

MIAMI, FL (December 15, 2009) – Alonzo Mourning Charities made wishes come true for South Florida’s youth at the annual Zo’s Holiday Party on December 7th, 2009.  400 children attended the event, held at the Rusty Pelican restaurant in Key Biscayne, FL, and were showered with holiday gifts thanks to Tracy and Alonzo Mourning, as well as donors who made contributions through a toy drive that was conducted weeks leading up to the event.

The invited children ranged in age from 8-18 years old and were selected from partner organizations such as the Overtown Youth Center, Children’s Home Society, 100 Black Men, Honey Shine Mentoring Program, and Leadership Learning Center at San Juan Bosco  The children were entertained by a variety of activities that evening including interacting with the Mourning family, face painting, a clown, a visit from Santa, and a cookie decorating station where they were able to design their very own Holiday cookie.  Holiday-themed music and dancing filled the room as each group performed during a mini talent show.  To add to the evening, a generous holiday spread was served for dinner, including turkey, mashed potatoes, rice, salad, ham, fruits, and assorted desserts – catered by The Rusty Pelican.

In advance of Zo’s Holiday Party, Alonzo Mourning Charities initiated a community toy drive to encourage the public to spread holiday cheer by donating toys for the children attending the event. More than $18,000 in donations and 150 new and unwrapped toys were collected.  Ver Ploeg & Lumpkin, P.A., a Miami-based law firm, donated more than $6,500 and came out to volunteer at the Holiday Party.

“Zo’s Holiday Party is what the holidays should be about - sharing good times with friends and family,” said Mourning. “Seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces when they get their gift and the chance to enjoy a special night out with them makes this time of year special to my family and I.”

Community involvement and support of Alonzo Mourning Charities is always appreciated. Visit or call 305/476-0095 for more information on how to get involved.
